ECM VMT: Building Communities in Maths
A virtual Maths Team (VMT) hosted by the Early Career Mathematicians Committee

Details

When? Wednesday 22 October 2025, 12:00 to 13:00
Where? Online via zoom

Communities in all professions can help to build supportive environments, foster mentorship, create professional connections, and encourage a sense of belonging. In mathematics, communities are a fantastic opportunity to motivate, ask questions of and learn from one another. We may be involved in many different mathematical communities over our careers, from classrooms and societies at university to professional bodies and colleague networks to groups of friends with similar interests. Each of these communities offers us ways to collaborate, support each other and grow.

In this VMT hosted by the IMA Early Careers Mathematicians Committee, we are interested in hearing about the mathematical communities you are part of and how they support you in your academic or professional career. We want to hear about your experiences finding, building and engaging with both formal and informal mathematical communities - and your thoughts on why they matter. Are there things you particularly enjoy about the communities you are already a part of? Or, are there things you wish you could find in a mathematical community? Join us for this informal conversation where we will share tips and advice for making the most out of communities in mathematics.

A Virtual Maths Tea (VMT) is an online event hosted by the Early Career Mathematicians committee where we invite participants to join us for an informal discussion about a topic related to mathematics or the mathematics community. If the topic of this VMT is not for you but you would like to join one in the future, please check the events page for all of our upcoming VMTs.
